Australian Aboriginal bark painting, “Kangaroo of the Dreamtime”, natural, ochres on eucalyptus bark, Luke Nganjmirra / Oenpelli / Gunwinggu, kangaroo and mimi in x-ray style, ca. 1990.
The Nganjmirra family of West Arnhemland in Australia's Northern Territory has been a powerful force in the promulgation of Aboriginal art from the area of the Kunwinjku people. Luke Nganjmirra is a Kunwinjku painter, member of the family also associated with Injalak Arts & Crafts. Nganjmirra artwork features rock art themes, mimih spirits, x-ray styles and djang (ancestral stories).
This one shows a kangaroo in x-ray technique, mimihs, dilly bags, elongated feathers and what appears to be a jabiru bird. Acquired personally at Raintree Gallery in Darwin, NT, Australia in 1990
The authenticity of this artwork has been verified by respected Aboriginal Art Assessor, Dorothy Bennett. Documentation available.
