Australia/Central Desert, Dot Painting, "SNAKE DREAMING" acrylic on canvas, using traditional Aboriginal dot technique. by Mervyn Rubuntja/Arrernte.

Virtually all Australian indigenous traditional dot paintings derive from "Dreamtime" stories or memory maps of the artists home country.

Mervyn Rubuntja was born at Telegraph Station in Alice Springs in 1958. Mervyn's father, Wenton Rubuntja (dec. 2013), a major figure in Aboriginal art and law, started his painting in the representational style of Albert Namatjira, evolving to traditional dot style over time.

Mervyn Rubuntja, on the other hand has moved in the reverse direction, evolving from dot style to representational style of the Hermannsberg landscape school. This is a rare, early work by Mervyn. 24" x 16" #K107RUBJ
